Year 6
Welcome to Year 6 from Mrs Holdaway, Miss Tettey and Mrs Tierney.
HOME LEARNING
Spelling
A spelling overview for each half-term is uploaded onto Seesaw. Please ensure that children are remembering to practise, using the spelling strategies learned in class.
Spelling tests are carried out every Friday morning. Expectations are that children score at least 7 or above (out of 10). Scores are tracked weekly as well as which spellings they got correct and incorrect.
Reading
Children need to read at home at least four times a week for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. When your child has read, please ensure it is recorded in their reading diary (by you or themselves). Children’s reading records are checked, against this expectation, by Miss Blackburn each Thursday morning. Children receive certificates in Celebration assembly according to how many times they have read. 20 signed entries = a certificate.
Children complete an Accelerated Reader quiz at the end of each book they read and score points accordingly. The quizzes can be accessed on any tablet or mobile phone. These points are linked to Dojos and reading awards also.
Please encourage your children to read a range of different genres and for a range of different purposes (as this forms part of their assessment): even if it is reading a bus timetable, reading something online as research or reading an information leaflet– it all counts as ‘reading’.
Times Tables
All children have access to the website Times Tables Rock Stars, where tables work is set for them to complete. High scores and year group winners are put up on display in the school. If your child has lost their log in or password, then just let us know and we can remind them.
An English and maths piece of homework is uploaded onto Seesaw every Thursday, to be completed by the following Thursday. This can be completed digitally or printed out, at home, and hand written.
