Homework

At St Bartholomew’s C of E Academy, we believe that homework plays an important role in supporting children’s learning, building independence, and strengthening the partnership between home and school. Our homework approach is designed to be purposeful, manageable, and focused on key skills that underpin success across the curriculum.

Why do we set homework?

Homework at St Barts is set to:

  • Reinforce learning that has already taken place in class
  • Develop good study habits and independence
  • Strengthen essential skills in reading, spelling, phonics, and maths
  • Encourage positive parental involvement in children’s learning

What homework will my child receive?

Homework at St Barts focuses on core, high‑impact activities:

Daily Reading (All pupils)

Children are expected to read every day for 10–20 minutes, depending on age and stage.
Reading may be:

  • To an adult
  • Shared reading
  • Independent reading

Parents are encouraged to record reading in the homework or reading journal, which is checked weekly by school staff.Daily Phonics (Reception and Year 1)

Children in Reception and Year 1 will receive daily phonics practice to support early reading and spelling development. This may include:

  • Practising sounds and graphemes
  • Blending words
  • Learning high‑frequency and tricky words

Guidance will be provided to help parents support phonics effectively at home.

Weekly Spellings

Children will receive up to 10 spellings each week, linked to spelling patterns taught in class.
Spellings should be practised little and often at home and are reviewed in school.

Times Tables Practice

Children from Reception upwards will use Times Table Rock Stars (KS2) or Numbots (Early Years and KS1) to practise maths fluency.

  • 10 minutes per day is recommended
  • These engaging online platforms help children build confidence and speed in number facts

Parents will receive login details and guidance on how to support their child.

How is homework checked?

Homework is monitored in a variety of ways, including:

  • Reading records
  • Homework books
  • Class review and discussion
  • Online platform data (e.g. Times Table Rock Stars)

Effort and engagement are recognised and celebrated.

How can parents help?

You can support your child by:

  • Providing a quiet space and regular routine for homework
  • Encouraging daily reading and practice
  • Offering praise and positive encouragement
  • Letting your child’s teacher know if your child is finding homework difficult

If concerns arise, teachers are always happy to help.

Inclusion and support

Homework is adapted where needed so that all children can access and succeed, including pupils with SEND or EAL. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you feel adjustments are needed.
