Year 2
Welcome to Year 2!
Year 2 are having an exciting and busy year filled with curiosity, creativity, and lots of new learning!
In English, we enjoyed reading Papagayo: The Mischief Maker. Inspired by the story, the children planned and wrote their very own sequels, then brought them to life by recording their own audiobooks. We are moving on to George’s Marvellous Medicine, using the text to strengthen our inference skills and develop confident, fluent reading.
In Geography, we are exploring our wonderful world, learning the names and locations of all seven continents and five oceans. We are also discovering how explorers from the past helped us learn more about the world we live in today.
In Maths, we have been working hard to understand money—adding coins of different values, calculating change, and using part–part–whole models to help us solve problems. We are now moving on to multiplication and division, building strong foundations for future learning.
In Science, we have continued to investigate materials, looking closely at their properties and thinking about why certain materials are suitable for particular uses. The children have enjoyed conducting experiments, making predictions, and recording their findings like real scientists.
In PSHE, our focus has been on staying safe. We’ve discussed how to recognise situations that might make us feel unsure or uncomfortable, and the different strategies and trusted people we can turn to for help.
In Design Technology, the children have been exploring sliders and pivots to create moving mechanisms. They designed flying rocket pictures with moving parts and even made astronauts that could “save” us from the moon! We will continue developing these skills by designing, creating, and evaluating our own products.
Year 2 should be incredibly proud of everything they have achieved so far, and I’m excited to share the rest of their learning with them.
