Year 6

Welcome to Year 6 from Mrs Holdaway, Miss Tettey and Miss Dela Cerna.

HOME LEARNING

Spelling

A spelling overview for the half-term will be uploaded below each half-term.  Please ensure that children are remembering to practise, using the spelling strategies learned in class.

Spelling tests are carried out every Friday morning.  Expectations are that children score at least 7 or above (out of 10).  Scores are tracked weekly as well as which spellings they got correct and incorrect.

Reading

Children need to read at home at least four times a week for 10 to 15 minutes at a time.  When your child has read, please ensure it is recorded in their reading diary (by you or themselves).  Children’s reading records are checked, against this expectation, by Miss Dela Cerna each Friday morning.

Children complete an Accelerated Reader quiz at the end of each book they read and score points accordingly.  This then also automatically counts how many words they have read accumatively across the year.    Children receive certificates when they reach number of words read milestones.

Please encourage your children to read a range of different genres and for a range of different purposes (as this forms part of their assessment): even if it is reading a bus timetable, reading something online as research or reading an information leaflet– it all counts as ‘reading’.

Times Tables

All children have access to the website Times Tables Rock Stars, where tables work is set for them to complete.  High scores and year group winners are put up on display in the school If your child has lost their log in or password, then just let us know and we can remind them.

Homework

The above expectations for the children to learn their spellings, read and practise on TTRS is the children's homework, therefore it is their responsability to ensure that it is completed.
