St Bartholomew's PE and School Sport Aims, Objectives and Organisation:

At St Bartholomew’s, we aim to highlight the constructive effects that sport can have on everyone, regardless of ability, to become physically active as there is a sport out there to be enjoyed by everyone! PE is a subject which provides social, academic and physical development, as well as life skills. PE should be an inclusive subject, aimed at increasing mass participation. This is especially important to ensure that pupils understand what makes a healthy lifestyle, and how to maintain one. We really believe that PE provides a fantastic opportunity to develop a wide range of physical, mental and social skills and can really benefit all pupils.

In KS1, the focus is on the children developing their fundamental movement skills and physical literacy (such as running, jumping, hopping, skipping, co-ordination, balance and throwing and catching skills) whilst sampling different sports.

When the children arrive in KS2, the children use these skills and continue to apply and develop them in more competitive games, making their PE lessons more sports specific, whereby learning the skills to use in those games (e.g. Invasion games, striking and fielding games, Athletics, Outdoor and Adventurous and Dance etc).

In KS2, the children start to develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success. At St Bart's we value the importance of sportsmanship and being able to work in teams. Therefore we try to teach through games where possible, to allow opportunities for the children to do this and develop these skills. It is just as important being able to play in the right way.

We provide a sampling style PE curriculum, where the children get to experience many different sports, as we want all of our children to find a sport or activity that they enjoy, to spark that passion for physical activity, to then be active both inside and outside of school.

In the past 12 months we have worked with Wasps Rugby, British Cycling, Coventry City FC, CV Life, Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, Epic Academy, Coventry University and the NHS, to provide opportunities for our children to learn new skills and to work with external providers.

If you have any questions about the activities that your child is participating in during their PE lessons, or have any queries about PE in general, please feel free to get in touch.
